JAVIER SANTIAGO PIANO RESIDENCY

8-9 $10  | 945-1245 $20

Inspired by Jazz Piano legend Ahmad Jamal, Javier Santiago (Schubert Jazz Piano award winner, 2015 American Jazz Pianist Finalist) is a powerful jazz pianist breaking through the national jazz scene.  Javi wowed and inspired Bay Area audiences with his performances with Theo Croker at Black Cat over the holidays.  Javi returns to Black Cat for his first residency, playing with a trio, quintet and joined by a dynamic vocalist on Fridayand Saturday. Santiago has studied and played with international jazz greats Christian, McBride, Geoff Keezer, Robert Glasper, Joshua Redman and George Cables.  Dave Brubeck selected Javi to participate in the Brubeck Institute Fellowship.  Javi has played many great venues including the Kennedy Center, Iridium and Smalls in NYC, the Detroit Jazz Festival, Blues Alley in DC, and Yoshi’s in Oakland.
The residency will feature two themes that will be intertwined on all nights:  A tribute to the magnificent Ahmad Jamal, exploring Jamal’s original repertoire  (Arabesque, New Rhumba, etc) and delving into Jamal’s unique interpretations of the American Songbook.   Given the Bay Area’s love for all things astrological, during this time when Venus is retrograde (a time for re-examining what we truly love in our personal relationships), Javi will tap into Cupid’s jazz quiver of classic love songs spanning Cole Porter and Rodgers & Hart to jazz adaptations of Stevie Wonder and some of Santiago’s original compositions.   Every night promises to surprise and mesmerize!
Joining Santiago will be sax virtuoso Danya Stephens, powerhouse Corey Fonville on drums, masterful Sam Priven on alto saxophone, uniquely talented Giulio Xavier Cetto on bass, and the distinctive voice of Courtney Knott.
