Black Cat JAZZ@theEDGE!! Presents…

Tal Cohen Trio feat. Wayne Escoffery

Israeli born and Australia raised, Tal Cohen’s performance sensibility and original compositions are global, exuberant and life affirming! Jazz legend Joe Lovano says that “Tal Cohen is among the best of a very few young inspired pianists I’ve encountered….his playing is full of passion, focus and creativity.” Another jazz great Terence Blanchard calls Cohen “one of the brightest stars playing the piano to come along in a long time and has the promise of being at the top of the curve changing our minds about music.”

Cohen’s trio holds the stage with the verve, power and command of a much larger band. The trio combines complex modern jazz with graceful phrasing, thoughtful development and probative honest expression. Cohen doesn’t play for his audiences. He magically draws them into a celebration of his music and ideas. His new album, “Gentle Giants”, has received critical acclaim from DOWNBEAT and others and has warmed the hearts of jazz aficionados and newbies alike. The album possesses an audacious quality, making one sit up and pay attention to what each musician is playing and how the ensemble interacts and moves through the works. In his winter residency at Black Cat, shows were sold out and guests returned for a second dose of his musical magic.

Plus, this performance features special guest Wayne Escoffery!

Escoffery is a 2014 & 2021 Downbeat Critics Poll Winner for both the Tenor and Soprano Saxophones, and a Grammy Award winning musician. He is considered one of the Jazz world’s most talented saxophonists and in-demand sidemen. For over a decade, Escoffery was mostly associated with trumpet master Tom Harrell having toured the globe with him, recording seven CDs with The Tom Harrell Quintet and co-producing four of those releases. Escoffery has also been a member of The Mingus Dynasty, Big Band and Orchestra since 2000 and has made several recordings with the group. Over the years he has recorded and performed internationally with a who’s who in Jazz including Ron Carter, Ben Riley, Abdulah Ibrahim, Eric Reed, Carl Allen, Al Foster, Billy Hart, Eddie Henderson, Rufus Reid, Wallace Roney, Randy Brecker and Herbie Hancock just to name a few.

Don’t miss this.
